Each team’s hovercraft racer has different ratings in speed, acceleration and turning. In addition to high-speed racing, there is also shooting in the game, with different weapon pickups like rockets and mines available, useful for slowing one’s opponents down. Shields can also be picked up and can block the weapons’ effects.

If you did not live through the 1960s you may only know some of the symbols in Barcrest’s surfing game Wipeout from second or third generation references. Surfing first became popular among theHawaiin people and possibly goes back to the ancient Polynesians. The sport was brought to North America in the early 1900s but did not really become popular until the 1959 movie “Gidget”starring Sandra Dee.

Here is a bit of trivia. Did you know that Gidget is based on a real-life surfer girl? Her name is Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman. Her father Frederick Kohner wrote Gidget: The Little Girl with BigIdeas, a novel that inspired several movies and television shows. With the turn of the 1960s surfing took on a life of its own. The instrumental song “Wipe Out” was released by the Surfaris in1963. The song features a drum solo pitted against an electric guitar lead. The song has been used in over 20 movies and remains a popular icon of “beach music”. “Wipe Out” musicallyrepresents the joy of riding a wave until the water wins the endless battle between surfer and wave, resulting in the eponymous “wipe out”.

The surfing sub-culture was celebrated by film-maker Bruce Brown in the 1950s and 1960s in a series of documentaries that were completed with “The Endless Summer”, first released in 1964 (worldwide release was in 1966), in which Brown followed two young surfers, Michael Hynson and Robert August, on a journey around the world in search of perfect waves. The movie’s popularity wasmagnetic and compelling and it is considered one of the major inspirations for generations of surfers.

Barcrest’s game developers were definitely tuned into the surfing craze with their graphics and their design concepts.
